Toyota Classics Receives Applause From Music Lovers And Charities
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begawan - About 1,200 music fans were serenaded with the finest Spanish music performed by The Cadaques Orchestra in an enchanting evening at the 2007 Toyota Classics held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) last night.

In attendance as the guest of honour was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pah lawan Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud. Also present at the event were Senior Vice-President Toyota Motors Corporation Asia-Pacific, Mr Vince Socco, and NBT Director Haji Awang Ahmad Morshidi bin POKDGSDRDLU Hj Awang Abdul Rahman.

The orchestra started the evening's programme by performing the national anthem of Brunei Darussalam.

Mr Ninan Chacko, NBT Managing Director, in his welcoming address, said that with the series of Toyota Classics, the total amount of donations collected and donated to local charities over the years, had surpassed the $1,000,000 mark.

He extended his appreciation to Toyota Motor Corporation for making the Woyota Classic Series possible and thanked the audience, whom he called "The Big Generous Heart of Brunei" for their contributions and support of the Toyota Classic series over the years.

This year's collection totalled B$80,000. Two cheques for $40,000 each were handed over by Mr Vince Socco and Haji Awang Ahmad Morshidi to Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Haji Mohammad, who then presented the cheques to representatives of Pusat Ehsan and Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Cacat (KACA).

As a token of appreciation, the representatives of Pusat Ehsan and KACA gave souvenirs to Mr Chacko. Following these formalities, the world-famous Cadaquas Orchestra conducted by Pablo Gonzalez, and made up of musicians from all over Europe, delivered an evening of lively musical presentations imbued with the passions of Spain's colourful zarzuela lyric drama tradition.

Tenor Salvador Carbo and guest tenor Sean Ghazi lived up to their reputations in delivering delightful renditions that enthralled the audience.

The audience was mesmerised by the quality of their performances, the likes of which, are seldom seen (and heard) in Brunei Darussalam.

Rising Malaysian star Ghazi's presentations of 'Semalam', 'I Have Dreamed' and the very popular P Ramlee number, `Getaran Jiwa', were met with a very appreciative applause by the audience.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
