By Nela Awang
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Some 32 primary and secondary school teachers
received certificates, acknowledging their participation in the
workshop on the National Echo Training of Teachers on Human
Values-Based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education (HVWSHE) -
Integrated Lessons, yesterday, at the Islamic Da'wah Centre, in
Kampong Pulaie.
The first of its kind to be held in
the sultanate, the workshop was jointly organised by the Department
of Schools and the Curriculum Development Department, Ministry of
Education.
Present at the event as the
honoured guest was Hjh Apsah Hj Abd Majid, deputy permanent
secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education, who also
presented the certificates to the participants.
In her speech, Hjh Apsah
highlighted that the programme was not to create a new subject on
`Human Values' instead it was held to integrate into curriculum, the
human values that concern the society such as to water, sanitation
and health.
The four-day workshop was attended
by 16 teachers from eight primary schools, and another, 16 from four
secondary schools, teaching English Language, Mathematics, Science
and Geography.
She also emphasised the importance
of giving special attention to human values education, as it was a
challenge for the existing educational institutions. The guest of
honour then quoted a titah by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, in conjunction with the National
Teacher's Day celebration on September 23, 1998.
In the titah, His Majesty stressed
the need for plan and actuates education in every aspect, not only
for academic development, but also in nurturing and shaping
attitudes.
Throughout the training, the
participants had been exposed with knowledge on core human values,
suitable with the needs underlined by the Seameo organisations and
UN-Habitat.
They were also taught on the
preparation of lesson plans and evaluation tools, used in evaluating
the changes in the students' attitudes.
As a follow tip after the training,
there would be a pilot testing in the schools involved.
The HVWSHE is a cooperative project
between Seameo and UN-Habitat for Southeast Asian Schools. The
project is meant to promote wise and sustainable use of water and
sanitation amongst the Southeast Asian people and to support the
achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by the
United Nations regarding sustainable development and access to water
and sanitation.
The whole training was to introduce
teachers about the concept and rationale of integrating HVWSHE, and
therefore enable them to develop HVWSHE-integrated lesson plans and
teaching learning materials in classes.
The selected teachers underwent
training since October 24; at the Rimba II Primary School.
The workshop was facilitated by
tliree resource persons from the Curriculum Development Department,
STEP Centre and from Rimba Secondary School, respectively.-- Courtesy of
