Brunei Host Special Olympics

Begawan - A total of seven teams - Brunei Darussalam (Brunei
A and Brunei B), Sabah (Beaufort, Kota Kinabalu and Tawau), Sarawak
(Kuching) and Indonesia (Kalimantan) - will be taking part in the
two-day Special Olympics Borneo Cup 5-a-side soccer tournament from
Dec 1-2.
The official opening ceremony on
Friday Dec 1 will be held at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium
Berakas at 3pm. The public are also welcome to watch the matches
starting at 7.30am:
The semifinal and final matches on
Saturday, Dec 2 will also be held at the Hassanal Bolkiah National
Stadium Berakas at 7.30pm.
This will be followed by the
closing ceremony where the champions will be crowned. The
contingents are expected to arrive in Brunei Darussalam today
followed by a handing over sponsorship ceremony.
The contingents will also be
attending a welcoming dinner, which will see the launching of the
‘Family Support Network'.
The organising committee wishes to
extend their gratitude to HSBC, for their contribution as the main
sponsor. Further acknowledgement goes to various government
departments, BAFA, Referees Association and individuals for their
generosity and contribution.
Special Olympics is an
international organisation dedicated to empower individuals with
intellectual disabilities to become physically fit. Brunei
Darussalam officially registered to become a Special Olympics member
in 2003, with the cooperation between various government agencies
and Pusat Ehsan.
Since Brunei's registration, there
have been a series of .events launched by Special Olympics Brunei,
from conferences and seminars, to sporting events. The achievement
of participating athletes has been exceptional.'
And this year marks another
milestone of achievements for Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam, as
for the first time, the nation will be hosting the Special Olympics
