Guidebook Launched To Define
Village Borders
By Lyna Mohamad
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A guidebook has been launched to clearly define the
borders of mukims and villages as part of a drive to expand the use
of Geographical Information System (GIS).
The guidebook will help the
community leaders to identify their area's borders to ensure better
administration. Other agencies also stand to benefit from the
guidebook published by the Department of Survey.
With the mapping technology based
on GIS available at the Department of Survey, the agencies will be
able to carry out research, planning, population census and so forth
with greater accuracy.
Minister of Development Pehin Dato
Seri Setia Awg Hj Abdullah yesterday launched the Department of
Survey's "Buku Panduan Sempadan Mukim dan Kampung Negara Brunei
Darussalam".
He said in the era of globalisation,
we are becoming more aware of the effects of pollution due to land
and economic development. GIS could play an important role in
solving these issues.
What is needed is to research how
far the GIS is used here and as such we can make moves towards
spreading it to all disciplines that need the utilisation of GIS, he
added.
The minister noted that the main
role of the World GIS Day is to raise awareness of GIS which can
change our lives as this technology is widely used in advanced
countries.
Data stored can be made into
information that can be integrated into an organisation's strategy
to avoid wastage and increase production and efficiency. In
conjunction with the World GIS Day, which Brunei is celebrating for
the first time, he called on the Department of Survey and other
agencies to play a proactive role in implementing GIS in the
country.
These, he added, included updating
maps and the utilisation of satellite image technology such as
Goggle Earth. In publishing the guidebook, the Department of Survey
identified the mukim and village borders in the interest of all
parties.
Survey General Awg Hj Mohd Jamil Hj
Mohd Ali, in his welcoming speech, said the publication will enable
the penghulus and village heads to identify their village/mukim
borders and help in their administrative responsibilities.
At the ceremony, the minister
handed out the guidebooks to the district officers of the four
districts for distribution to penghulus and village heads.
Amongst others present were Deputy
Minister of Development, Dato Paduka DrAwg Hj Mat Sony Hj Mohd
Hussein, members of the LEGCO, Permanent Secretaries (Technical and
Professional) Awg Hj Mohd Said POKPS DP Hj Hashim and
(Administration and Finance) Awg Hj Brahim Hj Ismail.-- Courtesy of Borneo
