Tamu Kianggeh
By Azlan Othman and Za'im Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Twelve Indonesian nationals, who allegedly misused
their work quotas by becoming vendors at Tamu Kianggeh in the
capital, were detained in a crackdown conducted yesterday morning by
enforcement officers from the Municipal Board, Labour and
Immigration Departments.
The two-hour operation codenamed
"Ops Tamu Sedar 3" began at gam involving 45 personnel. The
Municipal Board personnel were led by Yusri bin Hj Mohd Bahrin, Head
of Municipal Enforcement Unit.
The authorities conducted
surveillance on the suspects' activities three weeks ago. Such
operations are carried out from time to time. Yesterday's operation
was a follow-up to two raids carried out in March and April this
year.
Ten suspects were brought to the
immigration office for investigation, while the other two were
released after their employers surrendered their passports. As the
immigration personnel looked for offenders of Immigration Rules and
Regulations (Chapter 17) and Passport Act (Chapter 146), the
Municipal Board acted against those who infringed Miscellaneous
Licence Act, Cap 127. The labour officials took action against those
who breached Section 118.
The operation was also meant to
inculcate discipline among the vendors at the Tamu on cleanliness as
well as look for vendors who rented out their stalls to foreign
workers to operate. The Municipal Department carries out similar
operations in areas under its jurisdiction such as the Gadong wet
market.
During the inspection, one of the
foreign nationals was found to be a fugitive after his passport was
discovered to be dubious. He was taken to the immigration office
where records showed that he was using another person's guarantee
after his own guarantee had long expired.
Meanwhile, another foreign worker
was suspected of working at a stall at Tamu Kianggeh while he is in
the country on a visit pass which is valid until December 4, 2006.-- Courtesy of Borneo
