ASEAN Corner Launched At School
By Lyna Mohamad

Bandar Seri Begawan - The principle of the foundation of Asean is that member countries respect each - other's independence, sovereignty, territory and national identity based on-the policy of not interfering in the affairs of other countries.

The Asean region has a population of about 500 million and nearly half of this population is made up of youths and children. Although Brunei Darussalam has a population of only 370,000, it still possesses the same importance as other member countries.

Establishedon August 8, 1967 under the Asean Declaration in Bangkok, Thailand, Asean aims to speed up economic growth, social and regional cultural development through cooperation. Since its establishment, Asean has achieved major successes in various fields of cooperation.

Asean supports the spirit of cooperation in economy, security, social culture, information technology, youths, information, health, environment and so forth. The history and objectives of Asean were outlined by the Special Duties Officer at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Paduka Hj Mahmud Hj Bakyr, when he launched Sayyidina Hussain Secondary School's Asean Corner yesterday.

It is hoped that the Asean Corner will benefit the students not only in providing various information on other member countries but also enable the schoolchildren to study the lives of other Asean nationalities and their success in various fields. This, he noted, will consolidate the desire behind the Asean Declaration 1984 that is the collective need for member countries to cooperate in various fields of life to achieve peace, freedom and prosperity.

Sayyidina Hussain Secondary School is again participating in the nationwide Asean Corner Exhibition Competition for colleges and secondary schools organised by the Ministry of Education.

The school emerged as first runner-up in the competition in 2004 and this year, various efforts have been made to improve the school's Asean Corner such as organising drawing competitions, quizzes - and exhibitions.

The launching yesterday was also aimed at providing information to students and teachers as well as the public on Asean countries, raising awareness of the school's exhibition and encouraging cooperation, teamwork and understanding.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
