Japanese Experts At Energy Seminar
By Sonia K
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Japanese government sponsored Japan's Energy
Conservation Centre general manager Kazuhiko Yoshida and technical
expert Fumio Ogawa to attend an energy conservation seminar held at
the Civil Service Institute on November 27.
The event, promoted by the Asean
Energy Management System, was entitled "Promotion of Energy
Efficiency and Conservation". Among the participants at the seminar
were relevant government and private sector personnel.
Yesterday, Yoshida and Ogawa
carried out an energy conservation analysis at the Brunei Shell
Petroleum's Oil and Gas Development Centre, the Butra Heidelberge
Cement plant, and the Orchid Garden Hotel.
Prior to this, the duo headed a
workshop on energy conservation techniques at the Orchid Garden
Hotel. During a discussion at the Orchid Garden Hotel, Japanese
Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Mr Hashimoto Itsuo said, "We are
currently faced by demands from two opposing forces. Global warming
is a common problem which needs to be solved in order to sustain
economic growth. In addition, recent high crude oil prices have led
to high-energy prices, which are greatly affecting the world
economy.
To cope with these conflicting
situations, we need technologies that enable us to use energy
without causing damage to the environment, including the development
of non-damaging energy sources."
The ambassador also said that the
first oil crisis spurred the establishment of energy conservation
measures in Japan. Each and every Japanese held a strong awareness
of energy conservation, with the government passing a law regarding
energy conservation through the spread of highly efficient
appliances.
As a result, he said, Japan's use
of energy has become more efficient than that of any other advanced
industrialised nation.
"Energy conservation in Japan has
already progressed to a high level, but in the future it will be
essential for every individual to contribute towards energy-saving
measures," he added. -- Courtesy of Borneo
