Brunei Win 20 Medals

Begawan - The Brunei contingent bagged 20 medals (one gold,
11 silver and eight bronze) in the just-concluded 5th BIMP-EAGA
Friendship Games in Makassar, west Sulawesi,Indonesia.
The athletes were welcomed back at
the Brunei International Airport by the Director of Youth and
Sports, Awang Matassim bin Hj Jibah and officials from the
Department of Youth and Sports including family members yesterday.
Brunei led by chef-de-mission Pg
Sabri bin Pg Hj Mohamad won gold in the sepak takraw regu event from
the team consisting of Ismail Ang, Sharul, - Esmidiade and Azmi. A
total of 28 athletes and 13 officials represented the country for
their third participation in the games in Makassar from Nov 24-26.
Brunei took part in athletics, pencak silat, swimming, sepak takraw
and tennis.
Brunei collected the most medals
from the swimming events with 13 medals out of the 20 won. Maria
Grace Koh bagged four silvers and two bronze medals.
Maria Grace Koh won silvers in the
50m, 100m, and 20m backstroke while the bronze came from the ladies
4x200m freestyle relay and the ladies' 400m individual medley.
Second to Maria's medal collection was male swimmer Sui Kent Chung
who bagged three silvers and 2 bronze medals.
In pencak silat, Brunei managed to
win four silvers and one bronze medal. The silvers were won by Amali
Hj Malek, Khuzaiman, Rohana and Asliza from the Men's Class C, Men's
Class D, Women's Class A and Women's Class B respectively.
The pencak silat bronze was won in
the Men's Class B by Amirul Ahad. Brunei's Abd Haqim Haji Yahya won
a bronze medal in the high jump event. The BIMP-EAGA Friendship
Games are held every two years to foster camaraderie among countries
