Sayyidina Hassan's Top Students
Awarded
By Jon Tam poi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Sayyidinah Hassan Secondary School in Kilanas held
a prize presentation ceremony to honour the school's outstanding
students and educators for their achievements this year.
The guest of honour at the event
was Awg Koh Hong Puah, Acting Assistant Director of Schools
(Secondary Section) at the Ministry of Education.
"Students should prepare themselves
now as the working world still requires one to be academically
qualified apart from having a clean conduct and good discipline,"
said Awg Koh in his speech. "These are assets that are in high
demand.
"In this regard, His Majesty's
Government has opened ways for citizens of Brunei Darussalam to
further their studies at university level, both locally and abroad.
The free education provided here is not found in many countries.
There is no reason why a person couldn't have education or achieve
higher qualifications," he added.
The guest of honour expressed his
confidence that students have their own potential to develop further
in education. He also observed that while the results of PMB and
BGCE `0' level examinations for the past 5 years were not
consistent, comparative results of the PMB examinations in 2004 and
2005 showed an increase in passing rate from 76.75 per cent to 80.62
per cent. The BGCE `0' Level results also improved from 66.91 per
cent in 2004 to 78.89 per cent in 2005.
The guest of honour praised the
secondary school for producing some high achieving students who had
obtained 8 and 9 `0' Levels, saying it proves that the students of
the school have the capabilities and quality to excel. Awg Koh also
congratulated the teachers for having succeeded in achieving the
targeted education level either in academics or through the school's
activities. He also hoped that the school would continue to do so as
part of its culture.
The guest of honour also advised
the teachers not to be too complacent after reaching their goal, as
the success of the students is seen as the success of their
teachers.
He proposed that schools should try
to develop the potential of every student and add variety in the
subjects taught. He added that extra-curricular activities would
create greater interest and a greater variety of choices that would
help develop a student's potential.
Awg
Koh concluded by saying the relationship between the school, parents
and the community is also important as "a positive partnership will
assist the school to carry out the various programmes that had been
created, which eventually will be the strength of the school".
The guest of honour later presented
the prizes and certificates to the outstanding students and
teachers. The ceremony was held at the school's auditorium. -- Courtesy of Borneo
