It Is A fast Changing World of
Education Says Crown Prince
Bandar Seri
Begawan - His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah,
the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office
said that the nation's education era have undergone various changes
and modernization.
|
That was in line with the latest
developments in the educational methods and technology, as well
as the latest socio-economic developments in the country and
globally.
His Royal Highness part of the
educational success was the result of involvement from both the
professional and private institutions.
He was speaking this morning
when he officially launched the opening of the PGGMB school
complex in Kampung Sungai Akar. The school is an offshoot of the
local Malay Teacher’s Association.
The royal visitor was welcomed
by the President of PGGMB, Awang Haji Antin bin Ahad and the
Executive and Consultative Committee of PGMMB.
The National Anthem was then
played followed by a choir made up of more than 20 secondary
students of PGGMB.

In his welcoming address, the
President of PGGMB Awang Haji Antin touched on the achievements
attained by the institution in its 67 years of establishment.
|
He said that over the years every
member of PGGMB had worked hard in support of the government in
nation building in many areas irrespective of their capacities
whether as ministers, high ranking government officials, teachers or
even in their retirement. Awang Haji Antin said- the contributions
albeit minimal - had enabled PGGMB to educate Brunei's young.
His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al
Muhtadee Billah the Crown Prince in his address stressed that the
country's educational system's modernization was in line with the
latest developments in the educational methods and technologies, as
well as the latest socio-economic development in the country and
globally.
His Royal Highness said the Malay
Teachers' Association's role and contribution in the educational
field should be made an example, especially in terms of providing
building infrastructure and conducive learning facility.
The involvement of private schools
will further increase opportunities for basic education where the
need has increased from year to year.
His Royal Highness also made the
following points:
As of 2006, 29 percent of the total
students in the country were enrolled in private schools.
Statistics in 2005 also showed
there were 177 private educational schools registered with the
Ministry of Education.
This is a significant figure in the
country's schools system.
The private sector's involvement in
the schools system should not only be seen as the country's
economical gain.
But more importantly, it had also
succeeded in raising the quality of education for the country's
population.
The achievement of an educational
institution requires all stakeholders to be continuously committed.
And understands their respective
roles in order to give the best attention and contributions.
His Royal Highness stressed on the
need for continuous commitment and understanding by all stakeholders
on their respective roles so as to give the best attention and
contribution. This, His Royal Highness pointed out, constitutes one
of the main challenges to the management of educational institutions
toward ensuring the quality, diversity and sustenance of the
educational system.
His Majesty's government welcomes
the private sector's involvement in particular in the provision of
the educational infrastructure.
This is crucial in ensuring
sustenance in the supply of local human resource which will
hopefully support the government's commitment in enhancing the
quality of an educated and competent human resource.
The government also hopes that the
private sector's involvement will also provide the competitive edge
to further enhance the potential of the education industry as well
as the nation's commerce.
The participation of the private
sector in the educational field is also hoped to uphold the nation's
aspiration, in producing educated citizens of calibre, through
quality educational system.
The Ministry of Education should
also perform its role in ensuring the private education sector does
not betray the trust placed by parents to private schools in
educating their children.
His Royal Highness viewed that the
school management cost should not be the ultimate priority but
should be balanced through enhancement of the quality of education
delivered to students.
The Ministry of Education has
enforced the Education Order 2003 and the Education Regulations 2004
with the objective to control the establishment and management of
private schools.
The implementation of which also
ensures the well-being and welfare of students enrolled in private
schools.
Opportunities to pursue higher
education are widely open subjects of His Majesty attending the
private schools.
This includes enrolments into
domestic higher learning institutions such as Universiti Brunei
Darussalam and Institute Technology Brunei and the awards of
government scholarships to those who qualified.
These opportunities can hopefully
provide high motivation to students in achieving excellence in their
respective studies.
The achievement of excellence of an
educational institution is closely related to the roles of the
respective school management and the capabilities of the entrusted
teachers.
The capabilities of the teachers
only would not be sufficient without the commitment from the
students themselves who should inculcate discipline and strives to
achieve personal excellence.
Subsequently, His Royal Highness
the Crown Prince consented to officially declared open the PGGMB
School Complex by signing a plaque.
His Royal Highness later toured the
PGGMB School Complex. The school started its operation in January
2001 with only 86 students. To date the school is catering to more
than 420 students under the supervision of 33 teachers. The visit
began at the school's computer lab. The lab is equipped with 30
desktop computers use for computer projects for '0' level exams.
His Royal Highness then proceeded
to the Science Exhibition. There were 14 different types of projects
shown comprising Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The school has
twenty two classrooms, 1 computer room, 3 science labs, an audio and
video room, a playroom, a library, a staffroom and a sick bay. His
Royal Highness was accompanied throughout the tour by the Minister
of Education, Pehin Dato Haji Awang Abdul Rahman
The library for secondary students
was also scrutinized by the Crown Prince. The facility is basically
used for reference or academic studies. The library also provides
direct internet surfing.
The Physics, Biology and Chemistry
labs are among the facilities provided by the school. The labs are
fully-equipped and each class can accommodate up to 25 students at
one time.
Special Form Four and Five classes
for Nepalese students drew the attention of His Royal Highness. The
students are taught English by local and foreign teachers.
The primary school complex was also
included in the royal itinerary. Initially the primary school was
known as the PGGMB kindergarten. The first class commenced in
January 1975 and in July of that year, the kindergarten was upgraded
to a primary school and known as the Sekolah Persekutuan Guru-Guru
Melayu Brunei, Jalan Telepok. The primary section then had more than
800 pupils and 50 teachers.
Subsequently, His Royal Highness
watched performances by put up by primary and kindergarten pupils.
The performances included silat - the Malay martial art of self
defence and singing.
The vision to make the PGGMB school
as an excellent educational platform has indeed become a reality.
The institution recorded 100% passes in the lower primary assessment
exams in the last 21 years of its 25 year establishment. --
