By Abd Rahim Mohd Taib

Bandar Seri Begawan - His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to receive in audience His Excellency Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts of Singapore at Istana Nurul Iman yesterday.

The minister was accompanied at the audience by the Singapore High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Joseph Koh and Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts of Singapore, Mr Ho Meng Kit.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, 59, was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister's Office in July 1991 and concurrently holds the post of Second Minister for Defence. On January 2, 1992, Dr Boon Yang relinquished his posts as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and took on the appointment of Minister for Labour, retaining his portfolio as Second Minister for Defence.

Diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and the Re public of Singapore were established in January 1984. Both countries have bilateral cooperation in several areas such as trade and investment, communications, education, broadcasting, cultural as well as technical assistance.

A number of Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) have been signed which include the areas of broadcasting and education. The many MoU's on broadcasting cooperation have resulted in co-produced programmes by the Singapore Broadcasting Cooperation (SBC) and Radio Television Brunei (RTB).

The latest cooperation between both countries was the performance of a rhapsody concert which was also held last night as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between RTB and Singapore's MediaCorp, the successor to SBC. Popular singers, accompanied by musicians and dancers, from both countries, conducted a live concert last night in the capital.

The Rhapsody concert now in its second year has replaced the, previous Sukma Irama annual shows. Last night's concert was also one of the highlights for the Singaporean minister's visit to the sultanate. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times Version
