KB Schoolgirl Hits Perfect Score
In US College Admission Test
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Charlene Bong, a student from Sekolah Menengah
Sayyidina Ali in Kuala Belait, has done Brunei proud by getting a
perfect score of 2400 on the US SAT Reasoning Test.
This was no simple feat as she was
among only 238 people who managed to score a perfect result from
more than a million who took the test. The SAT test is the most
widely used university admissions test in the United States. College
Board, the not-for-profit association that administers the SAT test,
announced that out of the 1,465,744 students (international
included) who took the SAT this year, only 238 of them (or 0.017 per
cent) obtained a perfect score of 2400. Amazingly that's less than
one in 6,000!
"I am truly impressed by Miss
Bong's remarkable performance on the SAT test," said US Ambassador
Emil M. Skodon in congratulating her yesterday afternoon. "It's not
only a compliment to her personal skills, but also shows that
Brunei's educational system is producing students who can compete.
for admission to the most prestigious university programmes in the
United States."
"Of course, American universities
take into account many other factors than just test scores when
making admissions decisions, such as secondary school record,
outside activities and the students' own goals. Since there are over
3700 colleges and universities in the US offering programmes ranging
from the sciences and the arts, to professional and religious
studies, I am sure that Miss Bong will beable to find a programme
that suits her skills and academic interests. I hope her example
will help show other students here in Brunei that the door to higher
education in the US is wide open."
Charlene Bong Yin Siet was first
featured in Borneo Bulletin in 1989 for being the first baby to be
conceived in Brunei through the IVF treatment. Her birth on December
1988 at Panaga Hospital was particularly significant at that time as
she is one of the earliest IVF (test-tube) babies born in Borneo.
After that it has been glory years
for her with a long list of accomplishments which include
representing Brunei in the Asian-Pacific Children Convention in
Fukuoka Japan in 2000, Seameo Maths Olympiad in Penangin 2005 and
the International Physics Olympiad in Singapore this year. -- Courtesy of Borneo
