Taps Run Dry In KB's Bumiputera Complex
By Liza Mohd

Kuala Belait - Retailers at the Bumiputera Commercial Complex in Kuala Belait complained that there has not been any running water in the building for the past three months. It has been very inconvenient for some businesses such as salons and eateries.

The toilets at the three-storey building have been the hardest hit. Since the taps ran dry a few months ago, shopkeepers have been collecting water _ from nearby public toilets.

The owner of a salon in the building told the Bulletin that it has been very difficult for her, as she has to collect water from public toilets daily to wash and disinfect her salon equipment.

It has- also been hard on Muslim workers, too. It has been difficult for them to carry out their 'wudhu' (ablution) before performing prayers.

The building is currently occupied by over 20 businesses. Business owners hoped that the Kuala Belait Municipal Department would take swift action to resolve this problem.

When the Bulletin contacted the Belait Municipal Department, the department explained that it was an internal problem. Furthermore, the Public Works Department said that there were leaks in the -piping and a blockage in the building's pipe system.

Maintenance works will be done by hired contractors to carry out re-piping works, an official said, adding that the water pumps for the building would also be replaced.

The official said that it would cost the department over $5,000 to fix the problem.

The official reassured the Bulletin that works would be carried out as soon as the paper work has been completed - roughly within two weeks.

The department apologised to business owners for any inconvenience caused and urged them to be patient. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
