Children Learn More About Fire &
Rescue
By Azaraimy HH
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Over 200 kindergarten children from Stella School
enjoyed various demonstrations as the Women's Operation Unit from the
Fire and Rescue Department displayed their skills in fine services and
rescue works.
Led by Ms Lee, the children visited
the Operation `C' at the Fire Services and Rescue, Berakas
Headquarters. The visit was aimed at educating the children on fire
services and rescue, the bravery involved in the job and also the
danger of playing with fire.
The women's operation is a newly
formed unit and has begun working with their men counterparts in March
2006. The 34 personnel are under the direct command of Operation `C'
commanding officer and are divided into three teams namely A, B and C.
Their works are similar to the men
from extinguishing fire in various situations to rescuing and even
catching dangerous animals.
Using a number of special vehicles
including their main vehicle, the Light Fire Attack Vehicle (LFAV),
the children watched how the women's unit worked their way into
extinguishing fire at a building and rescuing survivors.
Told by the emcee "kids not to try
this at home", the children were shown a demo on how fire personnel
caught a dangerous animal - an over six-feet-long python. The
personnel using a MPV 4 vehicle caught the serpent using a snake
catcher.
The children also watched how women
fire personnel descended from the top of a building using a rope with
various techniques such as Normal Rippling (descending through rope)
and Spiderman (descending upside-down through the rope).
They were told the techniques are
used to save survivors from high-rise buildings if there is no
alternative.
The women's operation unit also
performed a flying fox technique, which is only used when there is no
staircase. -- Courtesy of Borneo
