Brunei Milestones Now In Print
By Shareen Han

Bandar Seri Begawan - Two significant new books published by the Information Department were distributed to representatives of government agencies in Brunei yesterday.

Milestone: 7th Conference of the Asean Ministers Responsible for Information and Milestone: The Reopening of the State Legislative Council highlight a selection of Brunei's participation and contribution in the domestic and international sphere.

Milestone: 7th Conference of the Asean Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) is a semi-pictorial book that records a conference that was hosted by Brunei in October 2002. The biennial gathering, for cooperation in information and mass media, was first held in Jakarta in 71989.

In 2002, Brunei secured the approval of member countries to launch Asean TV news to fulfil a requirement of the Hanoi Plan of Action that calls for promoting Asean beyond the region.

The book includes Brunei's project proposal for a more efficient dissemination of news and features concerning Asean. It also contains His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei's titah during the opening of the conference.

Milestone: The Reopening of the State Legislative Council depicts the historic re-opening of the council on September 25, 2004 after a 21-year hiatus.

It has three chapters, each holding a set of sub-sections, including a brief history of Brunei's legislature, the rationale and outcome of the proclamation of the constitutional amendment and the suggestion of the council's 21-year absence as a technical problem rather than a political split.

The new $62 million legislative council building is located on Jalan Kebangsaan. The building, which' boasts an auditorium, a 500-seat banquet hall, a 60-seat conference room, a media suite and other facilities, is expected to be completed in March 2007.

There are 29 members in the State Legislative Council, including His Majesty, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, cabinet ministers, cheterias or noblemen, prominent figures who have achieved success in business, religion and society, and representatives from Brunei's four districts.  -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
