Rotary Club Helps Build Computer Laboratory
By Achong Tanjong

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Rotary Club of Bandar Seri Begawan is helping to build a computer laboratory to help schools selected by the club, its president, Albert Tan, told a press conference yesterday.

The club is seeking donations of unused computers which are still in good working condition to help the project. Donors may contact Rotarian Ricky Ng at 8981288.

In January next year, the club will hand over wheelchairs to Pusat Ehsan in Kg Bengkurong Masin for the special people.

In early March, the club will be holding forums and eye screenings for students from selected schools. It will also help students who cannot afford to buy glasses by giving them free eyeglasses under its Avoidable Blindness Project.

In March, Rotary Bursary Assistance Awards will be given to students who cannot afford to pay their school fees. This is the club's annual projectt to help needy students in selected schools.

Meanwhile, in December, the club will be sending selected students to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Camp Programme hosted by the Rotary Club of Kuching.

Last year, the club sent three local students to the RYLA hosted by the Rotary Club of Pontian, Johor, said Tiong Kee Huat, Sergeant -At-Arms.

RYLA aims to demonstrate Rotary respect and concern for youth, provide effective training for selected youth and potential leaders and encourage leadership qualities. Each year, the club sponsors three to six students to attend the programme in Malaysia, he said.

The club is also involved in helping the rural community in the remote areas of Bakalan to generate a water system for the villages and rural folk. This International Service Community Project is a joint undertaking with the Rotary Club of Kuching.

The BSB club with the Rotary Club of Bintulu is also helping the rural community in Sg Kakus in the Ulu Belaga area to obtain electricity supply and clean wafer.

Also present at the meeting were Kenneth Ling, Ricky Ng and Wong Chin Toon. The club has 17 members. For more information on the club, contact Albert Tan at 8721927. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
