Brunei Books For International Elite
By Lyna Mohamad

Bandar Seri Begawan - Information is a valuable commodity that should be shared as much as possible and should not be kept to oneself.

People need sufficient information to make a judgment, said Acting Director of Information Department, Awg Hj Amer Hamzah Pehin Dato Hj Zakaria.

In view of this, the department has produced two publications including on the reopening of the State Legislative Council which will be distributed locally, including to state institutions, as well as abroad, including to foreign governments and media.

Speaking at the handover of the department's new publications to state- institutions yesterday at the department's office in Berakas, Awg Hj Amer Hamzah said the publications were part of the department's mission to disseminate information to the community, locally and abroad. The chief guest was Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, Awg Hj Abd Aziz.

The publications will be distributed to readers abroad according to department's mailing list, including chief - ministers and heads of government, state dignitaries, mass media agencies, diplomatic envoys as well as state and higher education institution libraries, locally and in particular abroad.

Awg Hj Amer Hamzah congratulated the department's officers, especially information Officer Awg Musa Hj Mohiddin, who have worked hard in producing the publications.

The hardwork the officers had contributed to the publication as well as implementing the department's programmes showed their determination in carrying out their responsibilities in providing information and upholding the good image of the nation.

"Milestone: 7” Conference of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information" and "Milestone: The Reopening of the State Legislative Council" written for an international elite readership were produced by the Special Affairs Section - the Forerunner of the Annual Report and Special Affairs Division of the Department of Information.

The term Milestone indicates that the books belong to the Milestone series of overseas-bound publications. They are part of a line of publications exclusively designed for the international elite readership issued by the department.

With the contents in the form of narratives that describe events of significance in Brunei, the publications target readers such as foreign government leaders, foreign mass media, Brunei-based foreign diplomatic missions, a selection of foreign diplomatic missions not based in Brunei, regional organisations such as APEC and ASEAN and international bodies such as the UN and the European Union.

Milestone: 7m Conference of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information is a semi-pictorial that highlights the events when Brunei hosted the ASEAN Information Ministers Meeting in October 2002. Milestone: The Reopening of the State Legislative Council meanwhile describes the scenario on September 25, 2004, the first sitting of the legislature after its 21-year absence.

This publication includes brief snapshots of contributing factors and historical background relevant to the State Legislative Council and the narrative is also interspersed with sidebars that contain updates on the Brunei Legislature since 2005.

It also functions as a quick guide for international journalists, states and non-state bodies on Brunei's legislature and its constitutional significance.

The Department of Information, as an agency of the Prime Minister's Office, plans to distribute the two books to the representatives of the Brunei-based foreign diplomatic missions soon.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
