Unhygienic Food Stall Ordered Shut
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Cooking food next to a manhole and a drain as well as
by the side of a washing machine were some of the disturbing scenes
found at a food stall that has been ordered to shut down by the
Licensing Board, Brunei-Muara District Office, yesterday.
Following the closure of a restaurant
in Kuala Belait four days ago, the food stall in Brunei-Muara District
was ordered to close temporarily for the same reason - unhygienic
conditions at the premises.
Personnel from the Licensing Board,
Brunei-Muara District Office, posted a• closure notice on the food
stall located at Kampong Bunut, Jln Tutong conducting catering
business.
The food stall failed an inspection
on hygiene (48 per cent) by the Quality Control and Food Safety
Division, Ministry of Health, last month on places where foodstuff
were kept, preparation of food, handling of food and cleanliness of
the premises.
All restaurants or food vendors
nationwide need to score 70 per cent or above to pass the inspection
or face imminent temporary closure.
It was found that the food stall
owner at Kg Bunut did not have a proper place_ to run the catering
business. The food stall had extended its kitchen at the back of the
premises near a manhole and a drain.
Officials found the environment not
suitable for preparing food as there was a high risk of food
poisoning.
Following the notice of closure, the
food stall owner is required to clean up his act and close down the
operation at the back of the premises indefinitely. -- Courtesy of Borneo
