Gloom Over Boom Town
By Ignatius Stephen

Bandar Seri Begawan - The bubble over Brunei's boom town seems to be bursting.

In the process, Brunei's largest toyshop, Just Toys in Gadong, closed its doors last week due to poor business and a number of other establishments have also either gone bust completely or have relocated.

Many businesses are already suffering as recession has hit them in Gadong and elsewhere.

There is also other factor: Gadong is paying the price of its rapid success.

Brunei is in the grips of a general recession as public spending has not made an impact. Gadong, which once seemed invincible, is not exempted these days.

A popular cafe in Gadong centre which used to take in $4,000 a day will consider itself lucky nowadays if it took half that amount.

Gadong was and still is Brunei's No. 1 shopping and nightlife area with a number of modern late night cafes, shopping centres and hotels and a cinema that quickly mushroomed there.

Especially during weekends Gadong is jam-packed. Many young people just hang about playing loud music in their cars putting hotel guests and others in distress late at night.

"These people, who normally do not shop but just hang around in their souped-up vehicles are just a nuisance and are not good for anybody," said a Gadong shopkeeper.

Also, because of congestion, noise and exhaust smoke pollution, some people are avoiding the once popular nightspot.

Parking problems and roads, which tend to be too narrow, are other factors that are strangling Gadong. Gadong hit the jackpot when for some reason parts of the other once popular Seri Complex area at mile one Jalan Tutong was demolished.

Desperate shopkeepers moved rapidly to desert Gadong about 20 years ago as an alternative.

From that time onwards the newly built Gadong complex which came as a timely alternative developed fast leaving other parts of Bandar Seri Begawan facing a glut including the once popular town centre itself.

Soaring rentals have now levelled off and they are expected to remain so as shops fall vacant and the hiring will further adjust downwards.   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
