Conference
By Debbie Too
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei Darussalam has sent a delegation to the
three-day Universal Postal Union Strategy conference in Dubai in the
hope that their participation will result in improved postal services
for the country.
Communications Minister Pehin Orang
Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong
led Brunei's delegation to the conference which will gather about
1,000 participants from more than 130 member countries from November
14 to16.
The team will discuss with their
counterparts from the other countries the changing environment of the
postal sector and explore ways of building a dynamic global
infrastructure that is able to satisfy customer needs.
"The Postal Services Department needs
to learn from the experience of developed and developing countries in
the various strategies and new products available and also to learn
how the existing products could be further improved to meet customer
needs," the Ministry of Communications said in a statement. "These are
among the few issues which will be deliberated during the three-day
conference."
Other issues to be taken up in the
conference include the role of postal services in the information
society, types of postal networks, ensuring the sustainable
development of the postal sector, and reform and transformation of the
postal sector.
Brunei recently celebrated the 100th
anniversary of its postal services, with the Sultanate's Postal
Services Department vowing to continue to remain relevant despite the
ongoing challenges posed by the private operators that make use of
ICT.
Moreover, the ministry recently
hosted a roundtable among Asean Post Chief Executive Officers in which
a resolution was reached and will be tabled at the Dubai conference.
This year's Universal Postal Union
Strategy conference marks a significant development as for the first
time, the conference will be held away from its headquarters in
Switzerland.
It is hosted by Dubai under the
patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the
Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and
Ruler of Dubai.
The conference will also offer a
unique opportunity for members of the conference to meet and establish
networks which could become useful in shaping the future of the postal
sector.
Pg Hj Mohd Yakub Pg Haji Othman, the
ministry's acting permanent secretary, Postmaster General Abdul Kadir
Tengah and senior officials from the ministry and the Postal Service
Department are accompanying the minister to the conference. --
