Brunei Urged To Raise Bar In 15th
Asian Games
By Alex How
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei players competing in the 15th Asian Games in
Doha, Qatar are expected to perform well with high spirit and
ambition.
This was expressed by His Royal
Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah through his sabda at the Brunei flag
handing over ceremony yesterday at the VIP Lounge, Hassanal Bolkiah
National Stadium.
HRH, the President of Brunei
Darussalam National Olympic Council, stated that the players have high
responsibility to bring up the name of Brunei in the sports arena.
Fifteen Brunei players and officials
will take part in two events, namely Karatedo and Tenpin Bowling in
the 15th Asian Games from December 1 to 15.
HRH also acknowledged the `Project
Gold' programme initiated by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports
which has given the sultanate a proper and organized framework for
developing Brunei's current and future athletes.
HRH later handed over the Bnunei flag
to the Chef de Mission of the Brunei contingent, Japar bin Bangkol.
The officials included Assistant Chef
de Mission Hj Mohd Zamri Dato Paduka Hj Hamdani, Team Officials Mariam
Ulat and Pg Anak Md Sofian Pg Anak Ibrahim and Physiotherapist Pg
Shadon Pg Hj Damit.
Meanwhile, Pehin Dato Major Gen (Rtd)
Awg Hj Mohammad bin Hj Daud, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports
said that the players need to have a high level of discipline and to
keep away from the misuse of any prohibited substance in sports.
"This is very important as this high
level of discipline would help an athlete to perform better," the
Minister added.
Karatedo
Team Manager Hj Malai Jefferybin Hj Malai Mohammad said that the
players will do their best in the upcoming 15th Asian Games.
The players, which include Mohd
SofianAbdullah, Hj Eddie Jofraini Hj Johari, Mohammad Fazil Rewandie
Mohd Faizal, Hj Abdul Malik Mohd Zaini and Coach Hj Okida Simangasing,
will aim to achieve better than the previous game where Brunei grabbed
a bronze medal in the 14th Asian Games in Pusan, South Korea.
The Karatedo participants will
undergo an intensive 22-day training programme in Indonesia to bring
out the best in themselves before heading to Qatar.
Like the Karatedo contingent, the
Brunei Tenpin Bowling players will leave for Dubai on November 15 for
a two-week training programme.
Hj
Yakob Hj Abu Bakar, one of the Tenpin bowlers who had just returned
from the Hong Kong tournament, stated that they had begun training a
few months ago.
They also gained some valuable
experience when they took part in the Pre-Asian Games in Jakarta.
