6 Brunei Students In Jakarta For Maths Science Olympiad

Bandar Seri Begawan - Six Primary 6 students from various schools left for Jakarta yesterday to take part in the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) that will be held from today until November 17. They were accompanied by three tutors.

Present at the airport to send them off was Acting Head of STEP, Awg Haji Metali bin Haji Mirasan. The six competing students, aged 12 and below, recently completed their PSR examinations and are a waiting for their results.

Three of the students are winners in the Primary School Science Olympiad (PSSO 2006), while the other three are winners in the Primary School Mathematics Olympiad (PSMO 2006). Both competitions were organised by the STEP Centre in collaboration with the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd earlier this year.

The objectives of the Olympiad are to improve competencies of elementary school students in mathematics and science as well as to foster friendly relationships between primary school students of participating countries.

It is also aimed at motivating students as well as increasing and developing their talents and interest in mathematics and science.

Contestants for the 3r'd IMSO 2006 are Awg Ahmad Safwan bin Dato Paduka Dr Hj Ismail, Dyg Amirah binti Zamain, Awg Jasper Pang Yi Ern, Awg Muhammad Hazman bin Muhd Iskandar, Dyg Noor Azimah binti Hj Awg Mohd Jaafar and Awg Law Vi Yen.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
