Towards A Greener Future
By Za'im Zaini

Bandar Seri Begawan - A closing ceremony for the training of trainers for the "Environmental and Quality Management Systems and Standards for the Industry" course was held at the Mutiara Ballroom of Sheraton Hotel in the capital yesterday.

Twenty-four people took part in the programme, which was organsied and implemented by the Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS), Japan in cooperation with Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering, SEAMEO VOCTEC Regional Centre Brunei Darussalam and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan.

Pg Dato Paduka Hj Abd Hamid bin Pg Hj Mohd Yassin, the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, who was the guest of honour at yesterday's event, hoped that participants would be able to put more pressure on industries in the region to adopt cleaner production measures.

"The significant increase in the number of factories industries in Asean countries has inevitably contributed to environmental problems," he said. However, it is heartening to observe that Asean counties are aware of the 'grow now-clean-later' approach, he said, adding that that countries have started to incorporate environmental measures in new investments.

"Through the action plans that you have developed, I hope that you have enhanced your analytical and decision-making skills. And that as trainers you will take the initiative to disseminate them," the Permanent Secretary told the participants.

Meanwhile, there were also speeches by the Acting Director of SEAMEO VOCTECH Mr Mohamad Abu Bakar, Japanese Ambassador Mr Itsuo Hashimoto, AOTS Manager Mr Kazuhisa Ogawa and representatives of the participants.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
