Vandalism Posing Big Social Problem
By Sham

Bandar Seri Begawan - If you think that the use of drugs is a major problem, think again. The younger generation poses another dilemma: Vandalism.

If tolerated, this abhorrent act would certainly turn into another big social problem for the Sultanate. While it seems to be currently under control, it is a rather contagious habit that should not be disregarded.

We cannot afford to be laissez-faire and should be looking for ways to tackle it. Graffiti seems to top the list, often spotted on numerous buildings around the capital.

Quite a number of road signs have also fallen victim to the vandals' deadly axe.

They spray and break things. Vacant government buildings and private properties are favourite targets. Foreign workers and tourists have also been shocked at the state of public phone booths.

Relevant authoritigs have spent a lot on repairs and restorations. The money would have been better be used for other worthy projects had there been no vandalism.

CCTV could and should be installed at some strategic places before the serious matter gets out of hand. Although this may not be enough to stop and curb the offensive acts completely, it most certainty could help reduce their occurrence.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
