Lecture On Life Span Of Rainforest
Butterflies
By Sonia K
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre of Universiti
Brunei Darussalam (UBD) will be organising a Public Lecture on "The
Life Span of Rainforest Butterflies" by Dr Jan Beck on Wednesday,
November 15, 2.30pm at Room FSM 2.18, Faculty of Science, UBD.
Dr Jan Beck is a PhD holder and
joined UBD as a Research Fellow at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies
Centre.
His main research interests-are the
behaviour, biodiversity and biogeography of insects, particularly of
the Lepidoptera from the Indo-Australian tropics.
He joined UBD in May 2006 where he
carried out a research project entitled "Adult Feeding of Lepidoptera:
Effects on Fitness, Ecology and Distribution".
The lecture will focus on Dr Jan
Beck's investigation on the longevity of adults in many species of
butterflies at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre.
He will present results showing
differences in life span relating to phylogenetic and ecological
similarities in species, their larval host plants, and how life spans
are influenced by the quality of food. He will discuss these results
in the light of life history evolution, an important aspect of modem
evolutionary theory.
Admission to the lecture is free and
is open to members of the public. For further information, please
contact Dr Kamariah Abu Salim at 2463068 or 2463001 extension 1377.
