Passion Is The Key To Success

Bandar Seri Begawan - "Passion in what one undertakes is the key to successful entrepreneurship," said Richard Eu, the Group CEO of Eu Yan Sang International Ltd, a global health care group.

Mr Eu was here to deliver a talk entitled `From Local to Global: The Eu Yan Sang Story,' which explained how a family business became a publicly listed international company. The talk was delivered during the Asialnc 2006 SME Business Forum.

The difference between an entrepreneur and a businessman is that an entrepreneur is driven by passion, while a businessman takes on a business merely to make money, Mr Eli told the Bulletin.

Mr RichardEu joined the Eu Yan Sang Group in 1989. As the Group CEO, he is responsible for its overall strategic direction and management. His earlier responsibilities included managing the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) business of the group, which was then owned by another publicly listed company.

In 1993, he spearheaded the reunification of Eu Yan Sang's TCM business units in Hong Kong_ Singapore and Malaysia, which was completed in 1997.

The reunified Fu Yan Sang Group was listed on the Singapore Exchange Limited in 2000 as Eu Yan Sang International Ltd.

After graduating from the University of London, UK with a LLB (lions) degree in 1971, Mr Eu joined Haw Par Brothers International Ltd (now known as Haw Par Corporation) in 1973 and was appointed as the director in charge of corporate finance at Haw Par Merchant Bankers Limited, one of Singapore's pioneer merchant banks.

Mr Eu advises young entrepreneurs to have passion in what they want to create.

"In a group you need to find people who can work in a team. If you are not good in a day-to-day operation, you need to find a partner who is," he added.

In regard to whether lie would invest in Brunei Darussalam, he said that they were two potential areas - opening retail outlets and discovering new medicine. He also urged that the spirit of entrepreneurship be instilled from the grass-roots level. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
