Festive Celebration Continues With
Open House
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The season of goodwill, forgiveness and brotherhood
known as Hari Raya is continued to be celebrated with the holding of
an open-house to treat relatives and friends to sumptuous food.
The unique and heart-warming custom
of open house has become a tradition for both Muslims and non-Muslims
to visit their friends to convey their seasonal greetings.
Despite yesterday being a working
day, celebrants invited their relatives, friends and workmates to
attend open house during lunchtime or after office hours.
Beneath all the lavish hospitality
and celebration, the festivity also puts on display a racial diversity
at the practise of Islam by Bruneians. It is at this time, little ones
are seen in their best Baju Melayu, Baju Kurung or Baju Fesyen bowing
to their elders in respect.
Whatever circumstances a family is
in, a father would make an effort to provide his family members with
proper Malay-style attire for the celebration.
"As parents, we must preserve our own
identity by calling our younger ones to dress in traditional attire
during Hari Raya. In other countries, it is normal to see young
celebrants clad in jeans and T-shirts even on the first day of Hari
Raya," said some of the celebrants. -- Courtesy of Borneo
