KACA To Mark 20th Birthday With
Walkathon
By Achong Tanjong
Bandar Seri
Begawan - KACA Association will organise a walkathon in
conjunction with its 20th anniversary (1986 - 2006) on Sunday,
November 12, starting from lam at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali
Saifuddien in the capital.
The walkathon will cover a distance
of less than one mile passing through Jalan Me Arthur and Jalan Sultan
and end at the Taman. Members of the public especially family members
of KACA children are encouraged to take part in the event.
The organising committee is also
inviting youth associations and voluntary bodies from UBD, schools and
colleges to take part in the walkathon. The chief guests expected at
the event are the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports and the
Minister of Health.
Awg
Hj Abd Halim, who has been with KACA for the past 20 years since the
formation of the centre in 1986, said that in the early stage, the
centre had only a few volunteers from the RIPAS Hospital and the
Community Development Department who wished to help the less fortunate
children.
Speaking in the Rampai Pagi Programme
yesterday, he said the aim of the centre is to help and assist special
children aged 6 and below who have difficulties especially
in-interacting and communicating with other people. He said it has now
been extended to those aged 12.
Currently there are 531 KACA children
in all the four districts and the number is expected to increase, he
said. He also thanked parents for playing a vital role in helping the
centre to achieve its objectives.
At present, KACA has two permanent
centres, one located in Kg Kiulap near the RIPAS Hospital in Brunei-Muara
District and the other in Tutong town.
He said hopefully another centre
would be opened in Belait District soon to cater to the needs of the
special children in the district.
He said KACA is really in need of
volunteers to help its staff to manage the children from time to time.
Volunteers especially youths will be trained for an early exposure to
voluntary work.
He also thanked members of the public
especially volunteers for their generous support as well as financial
assistance offered to the centre since its establishment 20 years ago.
The centre is a non-profit
organisation which depends solely on public contributions for its
day-to-day operations. Those who want to make any contribution to KACA
can do so at its centre in Kiulap or Tutong. -- Courtesy of Borneo
