Waiter, I Didn't Order 'Cockroach Soup'

Bandar Seri Begawan - A customer yesterday got a shock when he allegedly found a cockroach inside his 'wantan' soup at a restaurant in the Gadong area.

He said he found the matter "very disgusting" and claimed that it was not the first time he has experienced such an incident.

He told the Bulletin that he attempted to speak with the cook, however the cook fled the scene. Meanwhile, the Bulletin contacted the Acting Head Private Sector Unit of the Licensing Section, Hj Shamsul Bahri Haji Mohd Zam Zam, who advised the customer to report the alleged incident to the Ministry of Health.

He said the Municipal Board will act on a memo from the Ministry of Health to close a shop if the level of hygiene and cleanliness of the restaurant is found to be unsatisfactory. However, a restaurant can still apply to reopen if it gives an assurance that the restaurant is clean.

He said that the Municipal Board has made efforts to ensure that restaurants maintain good hygiene standards by putting up no smoking signs and setting traps to catch pests. Restaurants are also inspected once a year. - Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
