Brunei-Myanmar Meet To Improve
Bilateral Ties
Husin Ismail
Bandar Seri
Begawan - His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, had an audience with the Deputy
Foreign Minister of the Union of Myanmar, U Kyaw Thu, at Balai
Penghadapan, Bukit Kayangan here yesterday.
The deputy minister made the courtesy
call to the foreign minister during his five-day working visit with an
aim of strengthening relation ships between their two countries. After
the establishment of the diplomatic relation between Brunei Darussalam
and Myanmar on September 21, 1993, the former country set up its
embassy in Yangon in 1997.
The two members of Asean have since
then taken measures to strengthen their bilateral relations in various
fields, including culture, education and economy. They, for example,
established a joint commission in 1996 for the promotion of bilateral
cooperation in economic, trade, social and cultural fields with
regular meetings organised in their capitals alternately.
Since 1998, both nations have
implemented a reciprocal visaon-arrival policy allowing the holders of
diplomatic and official passports with 14 days of visa exemption.
Brunei also signed an air services
agreement with Myanmar on August 3, 1995.
In 1996, Brunei's imports from
Myanmar reached about $770,000. Its imports consisted of mainly crude
materials, and food products.
Brunei's exports to Myanmar in the
same year amounted to about $20,000 comprising machinery and transport
equipment.
The figures indicated steady
increases from $3,210 in Brunei's exports to Myanmar in 1990 and
$78,103 in its imports from that country.
