Adding Colours To Mathematics
Lessons
By Sonia K
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) will be organising
a pubic lecture entitled `Making Mathematics Come Alive in the
Classroom' at 9 am on November 17, at the UBD Chancellor Hall Lecture
Theatre.
The lecture - organised by the
Department of Science and Mathematics Education, Sultan Hassanal
Bolkiah Institute of Education, UBD - will be facilitated by John
Suffolk, a senior lecturer from the department.
The Mathematics that most students
experience in school is learnt as a succession of tricks to be applied
to solve examination questions routinely and without understanding.
This is neither interesting nor
successful. Project work as part of the secondary examination system
could be a stimulus to the development of greater understanding, but
there is a lot than the teaching can do within the present framework
to make Mathematics learning more interesting.
Much of the talk will involve
participants experiencing enjoyable examples on ways of learning
topics using simple equipment such as paper and even themselves.
Admission to the lecture is free and
is open to parents, education officers, primary and secondary and
teachers, and interested parties. Further information is obtainable by
contacting 2463001 (Ext 1586 or 1545). -- Courtesy of Borneo
