By Lyna Moharnad & Hj Minor

Bandar Seri
Begawan - Over the last century since its establishment, the
Postal Services has seen various developments and achievements, said
Mohd Marian Hj Lakim, a former Senior Officer at the Postal Services.
Speaking to the Bulletin yesterday on
the 100th Anniversary of Postal Services, he explained that the first
government post office was set up in 1906 by the Brunei River in BSB
and later moved to the town area where the General Post Office is
currently situated.
During those days, he added, there
was not much correspondence within the country.
A majority of the posts were from
Brunei to foreign countries and vice versa, but this soon changed.
To date, there are 23 post offices
throughout the nation and the number is going to increase with the
completion and opening of yet another new branch.
The roles of the postal services have
also evolved over the years.
Before, it was used just for mail
delivery, but now it is a business transaction centre with services
like bill payments, as well as road tax and driving licence renewals.
"As planned, the automation counter
is in the process and I believe that in the long term, the post office
will stay relevant and utilised."
He also pointed out that they have
successfully transformed the post office into a focal centre: Formerly
registered as a government department, it gradually became a more
commercial system.
Mohd
Marian was in the Postal Services for over 16 years. His last post was
at the Mail Processing Centre in Berakas and he extends his wannest
congratulations to staff members of the Postal Services on its 100th
Anniversary.
Also extending congratulatory
messages was the Secretary General of the Brunei Darussalam Philatelic
Society, Hj Bakar Hj Berudin, who expressed his feelings of pride for
the government's recognition of the 100th Anniversary.
The Postal Services has set up a
gallery of stamp collections with historical information at the
General Post Office in commemoration of the 100"' Anniversary.
He considers this a milestone and
useful for the younger generation,
Being a stamp collector himself since
1983, Hj Bakar has many complete sets and first day covers.
However, he voiced out his
disappointment at the lack of in-depth research being carried out on
the development's history an initiative that should be taken by the
relevant authorities, particularly the Post Office.
He called for such a move to be made
soon so that the local stamps' history can be recounted and
appreciated by future generations. -- Courtesy of Borneo
