Brunei To Take Part In IMSO 2006

Begawan - A delegation of nine people, including six Primary 6
students from various schools, will be competing in the International
Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) 2006 to be held in Jakarta,
Indonesia from November 12 to 17.
A flag handing over ceremony and 'doa
selamat' was held yesterday afternoon for the contingent at Main
Conference Room of the Ministry of Education.
Guest of honour, Deputy Permanent
Secretary (Policy and Planning) at the Ministry of Education, Awang
Haji Mohd Daud bin Haji Mahmud, handed over the national flag to head
of delegation, Dyg Jauyah binti Tuah.
In his speech, Awang Haji Mohd Daud
said he hoped the students will be able to compete successfully with
otherr participants and bring home a gold medal from the Olympiad.
He also called for more efforts to
boost interests in science and technology in students. The deputy
permanent secretary added that the Ministry of Education was well
aware of efforts made by the Science, Technology and Environment
Partnership (STEP) Centre, especially during competitions.
However, he- said the centre needed
to review its roles and responsibilities to encourage more students to
take an interest in science subjects. He also called for other
science-related associations and companies to encourage more students
to pursue science subjects.
The six competing students, aged 12
and below, recently completed their PSR examinations and are awaiting
results. Two education officers will be accompanying them as tutors
during the Olympiad in Jakarta.
Three of the students representing
Brunei in the competition are winners of Primary School Science
Olympiad (PSSO 2006), while the other three are winners of Primary
School Mathematics Olympiad (PSMO 2006). Both competitions were
organised by STEP Centre, in collaboration with Brunei Shell Petroleum
Company Sdn Bhd, earlier this year.
According to Awg Haji Metali bin Haji
Mirasan, Acting Head of STEP Centre, objectives of the Olympiad are to
improve competencies of elementary school students in mathematics and
science and foster friendly relationships between primary school
students of participating countries. It also aims to motivate students
as well as increase and develop their talents and interest in
mathematics and science.

Awg Jasper Pang Yi Ern, Awg Muhammad Hazman bin Muhd Iskandar, Dyg
