Customs Enforcers, Rangers Foil
Petrol Smuggling Attempt
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The country's enforcement officers once again
thwarted an attempt to smuggle petrol out of the country through the
notorious mouse-trail route.
A team of nine personnel from the
Preventive and Intelligence Section of the Royal Brunei Customs and
Excise Department along with five personnel from the Royal Brunei
Police Reserve Unit `C' Company in -Muara succeeded in foiling an
attempt to smuggle 18 tanks of regular petrol by leaving them at the
side of the road in the middle of a farmland in Jln Junjungan, close
to the T - junction of the KualaLurah-Junjungan road.
According to the Acting Deputy Head
of Preventive and Intelligence, the Section had previously foiled
efforts to smuggle petrol across the border by means of modified car
petroltanks or by the sea route technique.
"But this time the petrol was left at
two separate areas on the roadside, about one kilometre from the
JunjunganLimbang border," he said.
Initially, the suspect bought the
petrol from the filling station, entered the farmland road at around
9am and left them (petrol) there before someone took it away later on
that day, it was learnt.
But the activity was detected by the
Customs Enforcement Officers some assistance from the Royal Brunei
Police Reserve Unit (or better known as Ranger Police).
The tanks used to store the petrol
were those of an unauthorised type and against the Brunei Shell
Marketing (BSM) directives. A local was detained following the
smuggling attempt. The total value of petrol smuggled was around
B$130.
The department once again welcomed
public assistance in combating undesirable smuggling activity. The
public can contact the department's hotline at 8714422 or 2382422.
