Workers Get Six Months, Cane For Stealing Electric Cables

Bandar Seri Begawan - Three Thai nationals `were sentenced to 6 months' imprisonment and 2 strokes of the cane by the Bandar Magistrate's Court on Saturday, after pleading guilty to attempting to commit theft of electric cables and to causing wrongful damage to the said cables which were worth more than $1,000.

Sukrat Thammawit, 38, Chirasak Wongchali, 41, and Ruangdet Puisoongnoen, 41, admitted to committing both offences on October 21 in the vicinity of the 'Dewan Majlis' Project in Jalan Kebangsaan.

The trio, employees of a contractor company for the Dewan Majlis Project, had planned to go to the construction site with the intention to steal, said the Prosecuting Officer Hjh Najwa bte Hj Abdul Majid.

When they were at the site, all defendants decided to go to the area where the construction items were kept to steal some cables, with one of them bringing along a saw.

The site supervisor saw the defendants and was suspicious of their movements. The defendants were then arrested. The Prosecuting Officer said the amount of damage caused to the cables was estimated at B$1,287.00. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
