By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - The nation lost one of its well-known drama and theatre actors Saturday night after he succumbed to his injuries sustained during a car mishap in Limbang a few hours earlier.

In the tragedy, Yahya Mat Zain, 55, was reportedly thrown out of the 4" vehicle driven by one of his two sons who accompanied him for a day trip to Limbang at about 3.30pm.

The vehicle reportedly went out of control and overturned three times at a strip of road some 20 minutes away from Kuala Lurah, the Brunei checkpoint with Limbang.

Yahya was taken by ambulance to Limbang hospital where he complained of severe back pain. His two sons were not hurt in the mishap.

An ambulance from the RIPAS Hospital in the capital then picked up Yahya from Limbang Hospital to bring him back to the capital. On arrival at the RIPAS Hospital, Yahya suffered breathing difficulty. The paramedics managed to resuscitate him, but about ten minutes later he was pronounced dead at about 8.30pm.

Yahya was buried yesterday morning at the Terunjing Muslim Cemetery in Lambak Kiri. Ironically he filmed one of his drama scenes at the cemetery just before the holy fasting month of Ramadhan.

Yahya who retired as a welfare official at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports earlier this year, is survived by his wife and four sons.

He played his last theatrical play Hasrat last July 20 during a side event for the Knowledge Convention at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

His last three drama serials, "Sisa Senyum Mu", "Pengabaian" and "Jiran" were completed just before Ramadhan and were scheduled to be shown on national television by next year.

Yahya began his acting career in 1981, acting in a TV drama entitled "Setitik Budi" directed by the late Pg Hj TajuddinPg Hj Tengah. He has acted in more than 50 TV drama productions including serials and theatre performances. He was also an active member of the Rumpun Seni Lakon (RUSILA) theatre group and a vice president of the Affiliation of Drama, Entertainment and Creative Artists (GAPHAR).

His artiste friends, drama and theatre producers were amongst those who attended his burial yesterday morning.

Fighting back tears, some of his friends considered Yahya as an "exemplary actor who was always on time at the set and easy to get along with".

Meanwhile, Pg Hj Abu Bakar Pg DP Hj Mohamad, the president of GAPHAR said the association sent its condolences to the family of Yahya.   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
