Women-Only On Tuesdays At Pool
By Achong Tanjong
Bandar Seri
Begawan - From November 7 onwards, the Anggerek Desa Swimming
Pool near the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas will
strictly be open to females only every Tuesday. This will give ladies
and girls more privacy, as no males will be allowed to get into the
pool.
There will also be two female
lifeguards stationed at the poolside. A male lifeguard will be on hand
to assist the female lifeguards in case of an emergency.
The superintendent of the swimming
pool, Awang Besar Hj Omar, told the Bulletin that this was a trial
project of the Youth and Sports Department under the Ministry of
Culture, Youth and Sports.
The project was rolled out because
there have been an increasing number of people, particularly female
swimmers, who are not comfortable with the idea of males and females
being in the same pool.
Awang
Besar said that the ‘Tuesday rule' will be strictly enforced, adding
that even young boys will not be allowed to use the pool on Tuesdays.
On Tuesdays, the pool will be open
for females only from 2pm until 8pm. Entrance fee is $1 for adults and
50 cents for children.
"We will see how the ladies respond
to this project," said Awang Besar, adding that if it is well received
by the public, the `Tuesday rule' would continue to be enforced.
The $1.3-million Anggerek Desa
Swimming Pool was officially opened on March 30, 1969 by HRH Prince
Mohamed Bolkiah. The length of the swimming pool is in line with the
Olympic length.
Awang
Besar hoped that more women will use the swimming pool following the
announcement.
He said at the moment, there are five
swimming pools under the Youth and Sport Department, including the
latest one at Batu Apoi Sport Complex in Temburong. -- Courtesy of Borneo
