By Malai FadleyRizal & Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - Four local men were each fined B$3,500 or to serve three months in jail in default after pleading guilty to thieving buffaloes.

The Bandar Magistrate's Court heard that the defendants were 35-year-old Pg Hj Ali Hassan bin Pg Hj Munap, Pg Mohd Zaki bin Pg Hj Munap, 33, Pg Sabtu bin Pg Hj Budin and Hj Hasrin bin Hj Aman, both aged 26.

The men stole three buffaloes worth B$5,000 from a 70-year-old man in Kg Burong Lepas, Jalan Bengkurong Masin on September 15, 2006.

They walked the buffaloes out of their dwelling to Pg Hj Ali Hassan and Pg Mohd Zaki's house in Jalan Balai Raya, the court heard.

The next day, Pg Hj Ali Hassan slaughtered one of the buffaloes and sold the meat to a stall in Kg Sengkurong for the public.

The other two buffaloes were slaughtered the following day and sold to the same stall.

Proceeds from the buffalo meat amounting to B$3,000 were divided among the defendants, the court was told. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
