Illegal Faces Three Months, Cane
After Years In Hiding

Begawan - He can run but he can no longer hide, as an Indian
national who had been hiding in the country by working in a bakery
shop and illegally staying in the country for three years was finally
caught on Thursday afternoon by the Belait Immigration Enforcement
Section.
The 35-year-old Indian national
identified as Chinniah Nadar Sarthivel is due to face the mandatory
three months in prison with three strokes of the cane for overstaying
and breaching Chapterl5 (1) of the Immigration Act, if convicted by
the Magistrate's court.
He was among twenty one foreign
workers who were inspected at four different bakery shops, laundry
services, tailoring and retail stores in the district during the
Immigration operation codenamed "Ops Berkas 108".
When seven Immigration officials led
by Senior Immigration Officer raided a bakery shop, the suspect who
was found working there was: reportedly unable to produce any
self-identification documents pertaining to his stay and employment in
the country. He was arrested and brought to the Section for further
investigation.
In a separate inspection on a retail
store, another Indian national was issued with a special pass which
requires him to report to the Section for further investigation. He
had been hired by a local contractor company to work as a general
helper. The operation started at 3.56pm and ended three hours later.
