By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Gone are the days when we see rubbish left to rot or
people littering in public as those caught littering or dumping
rubbish at non-designated areas will now face a compoundable fine of
$500.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to the amendment of the
Minor Offences Act.
The Minor Offences (Method and
Procedure of Compounding) Rules 2006 of the amended Minor Offences Act
(Amendment) Order 2006 has been enforced since October 12 this year.
The Minor Offences Act is a legal
guideline to strengthen the enforcement particularly towards rubbish
disposal or any littering in public places under Chapter 38A of Minor
Offences Act which could lead to a fine of not less than $500.
This was the highlighted by Minister
of Home Affairs Pehin Dato Seri Seria Haji Awang Adanan as he
officiated the opening -ofthe B$2-million Gerai Baru Setia building in
Jalan Bunga Kemantin Seria yesterday morning, now known as "Sri Selera
Seria" Complex.
In his speech, the minister
reiterated His Majesty's recent titah this year on the aspect of
cleanliness which calls for people's cooperation in upholding the
country's cleanliness and environment -and which led to the amendment
order.
The minister further highlighted the
widely publicised issue on irresponsible garbage disposal at non
designated areas, a bad habit which contaminates the environment and
could result in an outbreak of diseases.
The minister noted that Minor
Offences Act assists enforcement agencies in effectively resolving
offences under the act within a short period without going through a
court process.
The minister also underlined arrears
owed to the Municipal Department and urged business owners and stall
operators to constantly pay their rent accordingly.
The minister said in the records from
