Absah
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Liquor, beer, unlabelled cigarettes and dubious meat
were among the latest contraband goods seized by Customs officers in a
failed smuggling attempt recently.
Goods seized included 276 bottles of
600m] White Wine, 60 bottles of 700m1 Boss Premium Rum, 96 bottles of
375m1 Tanduay Rhum, 40kg of dubious Indian meat and 200 packets of
cigarettes without Brunei's Ministry of Health warning label worth
around $3,076 in total.
The Preventive and Intelligence
Section of the Royal Brunei Customs and Excise Department foiled the
attempt to smuggle the contraband goods using a boat along the Brunei
River from a neighbouring state.
The operation involving 21
enforcement officers was led by Acting Deputy Customs Supervisor. The
operation was the result of a surveillance carried out several days
ago leading to the seizure of goods on Wednesday evening.
The contraband goods were loaded
inside a car that was stopped at the Kg-Mentiri national housing
scheme. The suspect, believed to be a Thai national, managed to escape
to a nearby mangrove swamp.
Officers are still hunting for the
suspect who left his wallet containing foreign currencies inside his
car.
Meanwhile, the department welcomes
any tip off on smuggling activities. Those with information can
contact their hotline at 8714422 and office number at 2382422. -- Courtesy of Borneo
