3 Overstayers Get Jail, Whipping

Bandar Seri Begawan - Three foreigners were sentenced to imprisonment and whipping by the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday after they pleaded guilty to offences under the Immigration Act.

Bangladeshi national, Md Selim Miah Md Hosan Ali, 35, was sentenced to eight months' jail and three strokes of the cane for remaining unlawfully in Brunei for 1,163 days since the expiry of his special pass.

Another Bangladeshi national, Shafique Samad Howlader, 40, received a six-month jail sentence and three strokes of the cane for remaining in the Sultanate with an expired employment pass.

Meanwhile, Suyanto, an Indonesian, was sentenced to three months' jail and three strokes of the cane for overstaying in Brunei for 110 days since the-expiry of his social visit pass.
