On Track For 'Vibrant' Transport
And Communication Sector

Begawan - The Ministry of Communication is aiming to create a
transport and communication industry that is progressive, vibrant,
efficient and self-sustaining by 2024.
This objective was outlined by Pehin
Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar Bin Haji
Apong, Minister of Communications, yesterday during a briefing for
members of the Legislative Council at the Ministry of Communications
Building in Jalan Menteri Besar.
The minister said this plan will be
implemented through the shifting of role of the ministry from
providing services, building infrastructure and implementing services
to providing policies, regulations and facilitating business and
industries.
He highlighted the ministry's
objective of providing safe efficient, accessible, secure transport
and communication services. In addition, it is endeavouring to create
an information society and a Knowledge-based Economy.
The Ministry of Communications acts
as the `communicator' of Brunei Darussalam to the outside world
through transport and communication infrastructure, linking the
BIMP-EAGA to the world through Brunei Darussalam and making the
transport and communication sector one of the fastest growing sectors
that can significantly contribute to the nation's economic
diversification.
On the private sector, the minister
said this sector acts as an engine of growth in providing services as
well as transport and communications infrastructure.
The ministry is creating conducive
environment to enable the private sector to set up and run their
businesses easily without any bureaucratic obstacles. The minister
cited as an example the Authority for Info-Communications Technology
Industry of Brunei Darussalam and the amendments to laws to enable
restructuring which has led to the establishment of separate
regulatory agencies and corporatisation.
The briefing was held in conjunction
of Hari Raya to strengthen ties as well as inform the Legislative
Council members of the roles and functions of the Ministry of
Communications and the departments under it.
Earlier, the Legislative Council
members heard welcoming remarks from Pengiran Haj i Mohd Yakub bin
Pengiran Haji Othman, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of
Communications.
They also heard briefings on
Department of Civil Aviation, Ports Department, Marine Department,
Ports Services Department and Land Transport Department. Also present
were Dato Paduka Haji Yusoff bin Haji Abdul Hamid, Deputy Minister of
Communications, heads of departments as well as officials from the
Authority for InfoCommunications Technology Industry of Brunei
Darussalam who also gave a presentation on the role and function of
