On Track For 'Vibrant' Transport And Communication Sector
By Za'im Zaini

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Ministry of Communication is aiming to create a transport and communication industry that is progressive, vibrant, efficient and self-sustaining by 2024.

This objective was outlined by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar Bin Haji Apong, Minister of Communications, yesterday during a briefing for members of the Legislative Council at the Ministry of Communications Building in Jalan Menteri Besar.

The minister said this plan will be implemented through the shifting of role of the ministry from providing services, building infrastructure and implementing services to providing policies, regulations and facilitating business and industries.

He highlighted the ministry's objective of providing safe efficient, accessible, secure transport and communication services. In addition, it is endeavouring to create an information society and a Knowledge-based Economy.

The Ministry of Communications acts as the `communicator' of Brunei Darussalam to the outside world through transport and communication infrastructure, linking the BIMP-EAGA to the world through Brunei Darussalam and making the transport and communication sector one of the fastest growing sectors that can significantly contribute to the nation's economic diversification.

On the private sector, the minister said this sector acts as an engine of growth in providing services as well as transport and communications infrastructure.

The ministry is creating conducive environment to enable the private sector to set up and run their businesses easily without any bureaucratic obstacles. The minister cited as an example the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam and the amendments to laws to enable restructuring which has led to the establishment of separate regulatory agencies and corporatisation.

The briefing was held in conjunction of Hari Raya to strengthen ties as well as inform the Legislative Council members of the roles and functions of the Ministry of Communications and the departments under it.

Earlier, the Legislative Council members heard welcoming remarks from Pengiran Haj i Mohd Yakub bin Pengiran Haji Othman, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications.

They also heard briefings on Department of Civil Aviation, Ports Department, Marine Department, Ports Services Department and Land Transport Department. Also present were Dato Paduka Haji Yusoff bin Haji Abdul Hamid, Deputy Minister of Communications, heads of departments as well as officials from the Authority for InfoCommunications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam who also gave a presentation on the role and function of that body.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
