BEDB Woos Chinese Investors For
Spin-Offs
By Alex How in Nanning
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB)
yesterday wooed Chinese investors to invest in the downstream industry
of the methanol manufacturing and ammonia-urea manufacturing projects
during a seminar at 105 Conference Hall Nanning, China.
While a consortium comprising Incitec
Pivot (Australia), Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan) and Westside Limited
(Cayman Islands) are currently in negotiations to build an
ammonia-urea manufacturing plant at the Sungai Liang Industrial Park,
BEDB is now on the look out for foreign companies to tackle the
downstream industries for the products.
Abdurahman
Abdul Aziz, Senior Project Officer from BEDB, said there is a big
potential for local companies to tap into the downstream industry once
the two manufacturing plants are completed. He said this at the Brunei
seminar entitled `Business and Investment Opportunities in Brunei
Darussalam' and `Tourism in Brunei'.
Abdurahman
said the ammonia-urea derivatives could spin off valuable business
opportunities for companies upon its completion. "For example, the
product melamine - one of the derivatives from ammonia-urea - can be
further produced into wooden panels, dinnerware or for coating
resins," he added.
The other project at the Sungai Liang
Industrial Park which could create similar opportunities is the
methanol production facility. The plant, which costs US$400 million
and is expected to be completed by 2010, can produce 2,500 tonnes of
methanol per day, while the ammonia-urea plant can produce 3,500
tonnes of urea per day for export.
The Puala Muara Besar port project,
which could open up 4,000 permanent jobs, and the SME Innovation
Centre, designated to help promote and develop local ICT
entrepreneurs, developed by BEDB also drew the attention of the
participants.
Abdurahman
said political stability, strategic location and friendly people make
Brunei a good choice for investors.
