By Hjh Saemah Zulkeffi

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 40-year-old Filipino worker was held on Saturday on suspicion of violating work permit regulations.

The Law Enforcement Section of the Immigration Department said investigation showed he never worked with a local construction company, which sponsored him. He was taken to the immigration department for further questioning. The arrest was made during a spot check on a house under renovation on Jalan Maulana.

Another Filipino who employed the worker was issued a special pass and ordered to come to the department for further investigation. Both men can be charged for violation of immigration laws, if found guilty.

The immigration department reminded employers not to let their workers take up freelance jobs or place them to work with other employers.

The Law Enforcement Section said it will always be on the lookout and will hold inspections from time to time. It encourages the public to report immigration offenders to the department, through hotline 3331879/3341938 or 2383555 and 2383777 during office hours. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
