Bandar Seri Begawan - The Korea Language and Culture Week came to a close yesterday at the Senate Room, Chancellor Hall, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Also in attendance was Dato Hj Alimin bin Hj Abdul Wahab in his capacity as the president ofthe Brunei-Korea Association of Friendship (BKAF).

The vice chancellor, in his speech, said that the Korean Language and Culture Week will be made an annual event and hoped that next year, there will be bigger range of items displayed to help the public learn more about Korea and its people.

Earlier, Language Centre acting directorAwg Saidai bin Hi Hitam also applauded the success of the four-dayy event, which was held in conjunction with the Korean National Day.

The closing ceremony ended with a public lecture by Professor Han Hae Jin from Ewha Women's University, Seoul, South Korea.

The main objectives of the Korean Language of Culture Week were: to introduce Korean language courses, coordinated by the Language Centre to the UBD community and the public; to promote Korean language and cultural activities organised by the Language Centre; and to promote the functions and activities of the Language Centre as the hub responsible in coordinating the teaching and learning of foreign language education in the country.

The event was also aimed at forging ties between the Language Centre and other UBD faculties, assisting government efforts in fostering closer relations with Korea, especially in the fields of language education and culture, and increasing cooperation between UBD and the Korean Embassy as well as the Brunei-Korea Association of Friendship.

An exhibition relating to the event was also held from October 28-31 to showcase Korea's history, language, pop culture, heritage and technology.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the Korean Cultural Club was officially launched at UBD during a ceremony at the Chancellor Hall, in conjunction with the Korean Language and Culture Week.

The event began with a welcoming speech by president of the club Liew Chee Hau, during which he said that "we find it necessary to have an official launch to get UBD students to join us in experiencing the Korean culture".

He added that the main objective of the club is to introduce both traditional and modern Korean cultures to the students, noting that its establishment is a commemoration of the long-standing diplomatic ties between Brunei and Korea.

Later, BKAF president Dato Hj Mohd Alimin said the association was formed in late 2004 to promote understanding and cooperation between Brunei and Korea.

"We have achieved this by conducting a number of activities throughout the years with the assistance, support and cooperation from Bruneians, Koreans and other nationals in the country."

He also said "we are happy to note the continuous strong support from the Korean Embassy in many of our activities. This year, we pay particular focus on UBD, where the Language Centre has laid for us the privilege of cooperating with it in the expansion of its academic programmes for students and the public". -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
