Arrests For Gambling Declining: Police
By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - The number of gambling-related arrests has dropped over the last three years, police statistics revealed.

The types of gambling detected by the police's Anti-Vice and Suppression Unit ranged from four-digit lottery to baccarat, a casino game normally found in European countries, to unfamiliar games like 'Pasar Malam' and `Pai Kow' poker to hi-tech versions using computer software for poker, roulette and blackjack.

In the first quarter of this year, only eight arrests were made. In 2002, 134 gambling cases were detected, compared to 29 in 2003 and 20 cases in 2004.

Besides gambling, the police unit is responsible for curbing other crimes involving prostitution, immigration, customs, misuse of drugs and activities against the Islamic religion. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
