Thieving Duo Jailed, Fined
By Malai FadleyRizal
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A 36-year-old local was fined $2,000 or two month's
jail in default while his 24year-old accomplice was jailed for six
month- after they both pleaded guilty to a charge of theft in the
Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Mazran
Hj Isa and Hadiman Ahad were read a charge of having committed theft
by stealing 33 aluminium pipes measuring 2 1/2 feet long with a total
weight of 36 kilos belonging to the government of Brunei.
Prosecuting Officer Pengiran Nina
Jasmine Pengiran Haji Bahrin submitted to the court that both
defendants had gone to meet each other at the Berakas Stadium in their
own cars on October 25 this year.
There, they both planned to steal the
said aluminium pipes at the construction site on part of the As'araa
building in Jalan Menteri Besar.
They headed to the construction site
where the defendants left the gate open. A couple of police personnel
who were doing a routine patrol around the area noticed the opened
gate and went on to investigate. The officers noted that the gate was
usually closed.
Upon entering the site, the officers
saw that two cars, later identified as both the defendants' cars, were
parked side by side next to a substation there.
Then, two of the police constables
spotted the defendants carrying aluminium pipes, loading them into
their cars.
The officers then tried to approach
them but the defendants ran away and left the pipes in the car.
The officers chased the defendants
and called for back up when they couldn't go any further.
Immediately, several police officers
stormed to the scene and arrested the defendants.
The prosecution said that the pipes
were recovered. -- Courtesy
