BSP Exports Waste To UK For A
Lead-Free Brunei

Seria –
The Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Company took a giant step to make
Brunei a lead-free country by shipping its historic first export of
waste material to the United Kingdom yesterday.
The waste material bound for the
United Kingdom was sealed in 12 containers transported over land from
Seria Oil Refinery Plant to the Muara Port.
The material included surplus lead
and sludge from two tetra ethyl lead storage vessels that were
demolished at Seria Oil Refinery Plant as BSP’s final phase of the
move to support a national and worldwide drive toward a lead-free
environment.
The surplus lead compound and sludge
are classified as hazardous waste that must be properly recovered,
treated and disposed off in a safe and environmentally approved
manner.
Brunei has initiated a policy in 1999
on the auction of the lead usage in gasoline, and the government takes
this action seriously since the substance may lead to health hazard.
According to BSP press release, the
export of waste material is in full compliance with the Basel
Convention, which is a major international environment protection
treaty of which Brunei is a signatory.
BSP’s
move is also in response to the call made by His Majesty’s government
on a lead-free Brunei. --
