Charity Giant Walk Ends Today

Kuala Belait - Belait District Officer Haji Jamain bin Momin, flagged off the 107-kilometre Society for the Management of Autism Related Issues In Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Charity Giant Walk at the Belait Centre yesterday morning.

Seventeen people pledged to complete the charity walk which will end this afternoon at the Giant Hypermarket in Rimba, Bandar Seri Begawan.

Today, the Minister of Health, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman and spouse are scheduled to receive the participants after completing the 107-km walk.

Leading the charity walk, the seventh fund raising activity held since SMARTER was set up in 2001, is President Malai Hj Abdullah Hj Malai Othman. He is in high spirits to achieve the objective and create awareness about the association.
 

More than 100 SMARTER members also took part in the charity event. The charity walk was joined by autistic children who walked three kilometres to Soon Lee Department store along Jalan Maulana, Kuala Belait.

At the third stop within Sungai Liang Health Clinic, Datin Paduka Dr Hjh Intan, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Profession and Technical, Ministry of Health, welcomed the participants.

Prior to the walk, several organisations contributed to assist the association reach its financial target.

The SeriKandi Group of Companies represented by Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Khalid Sheikh Han Ahmad donated $1,000. Bank Islam Brunei donated $784; Takaful IBB donated $500. Staff of IBB bank gave $284

During the launch, association members sold tee-shirts. They will be holding a charity concert in December to boost the association funds for the new building to house its growing membership.

The President expressed hope that the public will acknowledge the association's charity efforts in order to boost the fund.

The walk bids to raise funds for a $1.9 million building to support programme development for its young and adult members.

The association has raised $10,000 and will be carrying out more charitable events to meet its financial aim.

Donation boxes were placed along the way during the 107-km walk for participants to contribute. The public can bank in their personal cash donation to the association's HSBC account number 013-044888-001 under Persatuan SMARTER Brunei'.

The association recorded 85 children with autism nationwide. Twelve children in Kuala Belait aged two to 12 years old are suffering from the disorder.   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
